Mont Fallère is one of the best-known three thousand-metre peaks in the Aosta Valley, especially considering its panoramic views. Next to the central valley, it offers a 360° degree panorama on all the surrounding peaks. Usually accessible from its S face, both in summer and in winter, it can be reached from the N through a complex path that offers all the emotions and difficulties that make ski touring such a great practice.
This route initially goes along the long Flassin valley and then veers left to go over the steep Ars col. From there, go right and close to the S face, which is climbed towards the shoulder that can be reached from the S, as well. The top is gained on foot on the ridge.
The descent is via your uptrack along a very technical path.
This demanding itinerary is classified as VGS and we advise you to undertake it with an alpine guide.
Approach
From the motorway exit Aosta Est, take the tunnel leading to the Grand Saint Bernard valley, then follow it and go beyond the hamlets of Gignod and Etroubles. Leave the state road E27 at Saint-Oyen by turning left before the houses, and then follow the sign “Flassin-Cerisey”. Keep going for about 2km until you reach the car park of the Foyer du fond in Flassin.
Description

From the car park, head SW and climb the snowy pastures, leaving the ski lift to the left, aiming to reach the houses of Rond on the edge of the wood. Keep going along shallow slopes and enter the valley, keeping to its orographic left side, before crossing the gentle stream shortly before the Flassin dessous mountain pasture.  Keep climbing freely, mostly following the summer forestry road and going beyond the farmhouses of Flassin du milieu until you reach the starting point of the summer trail path for the Col d’Ars. Turn left and climb the steep couloir that leads to the col, at 2.533m. Follow the edge of the ridge to the right at first, then lose altitude slightly and enter the picturesque basin where the Ars lakes sit. Carry on straight until you reach the altitude of 2.700m and then veer right to tackle the most challenging section of the north face of Mont Fallère. The slope gets steeper and steeper until you reach a small col at 3.040m. Leave the skis and continue with crampons and ice axe along the final ridge that leads to the summit at 3.061m, surmounted by a small statue of the Virgin Mary.

Descent
The descent is via your skin track. Drop down on a steep section and then it’s lappable territory with a good pick of juicy lines as far as the col; after that it’s still a steep affair. Once on the Flassin valley, keep to the right on the forestry road of your laptrack, usually well tracked in view of the many ski touring enthusiasts who come by here.
